How to Choose a Clothing Manufacturer: An 8-Point Checklist for Brands

Your manufacturer decides whether your first collection arrives on time, matches your sample and actually sells. A great design on a weak production line still turns into returns and bad reviews. Yet many new brands choose a factory on price alone, and only later discover the real costs: late shipments, uneven sizing, or a minimum order that locks up all their cash.

This guide gives you eight checks to run before you place an order with any clothing manufacturer, plus red flags and the questions to ask. We wrote it from the factory side. Why Your Manufacturer Matters More Than Your Price List

A manufacturer is not just a place that sews garments. It controls your quality, your delivery date and, in practice, your brand’s reputation. Choosing only the lowest quote often hides costs: re-made samples, delayed shipments, mismatched colors and stock you cannot sell.

A better approach is to compare manufacturers on the eight points below. A slightly higher price from a factory that passes all eight is usually cheaper in the end.

2. Look for Production Under One Roof

Every outside step adds shipping time, waiting and finger-pointing when something goes wrong. If knitting happens at one mill, stitching at another and printing at a third, nobody owns the final result.

A factory that handles knitting, cutting, stitching, printing and embroidery in-house can control quality and timing from fabric to finished garment. Ask a simple question: which steps do you do in your own factory, and which do you outsource?

3. Judge Quality Control, Not Promises

Every factory says its quality is good. What matters is the process. Ask:

• At which stages do you inspect: fabric, stitching, final garment?

• Can I see an inspection report from a recent order?

• Do you test garments with a metal detector before packing?

• Which inspection standard do you follow?

AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) is an international sampling method. Inspectors pull a set number of garments from a finished lot and count defects against an agreed limit. AQL 2.5 is a common standard for general apparel.

4. Confirm Certifications, and What They Cover

Certificates build trust only if you check them. Ask for the certificate number, the issuing body, the expiry date and what the certificate covers. A certificate can cover a product, a material, a factory or a management system, and these are not interchangeable.

For example, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 confirms that textile materials were tested for harmful substances. It is a material and product certificate, so it does not audit working conditions at a factory. Our materials are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified (certificate no. FSO15275698 OETI), and you can ask us for a copy at any time. Always cross-check any certificate against the issuer’s own verification service.

5. Ask About Private Label Services

If you are building your own brand, the garment is only half the product. Look for a manufacturer that also handles:

• Custom labels and hang tags with your brand name

• Your logo applied by DTF, embroidery, puff print or heat transfer

• Polybags, barcode labels and carton marking

• Retail-ready packing to the rules of Amazon, Walmart and Shopify

7. Test with a Sample Before Bulk

Never approve a bulk order without a physical sample. When it arrives, check:

• Measurements against your size chart

• Fabric weight and feel

• Stitching, seams and finishing

• Print or embroidery placement and color

• Labels, tags and packaging

8. Check Export Experience and Communication

• Only stock photos, never the real factory

• Cannot say which production steps are outsourced

• Pushes you to approve bulk before a sample

• Certificates with no number, no expiry date or in another company’s name

• A very low price with no fabric weight stated

• Slow, vague replies before you have even ordered
